Why should I attain the CPC designation?

Lars Callieou has appeared at the Just for Laughs Festival, has a comedy special currently airing on the Comedy Network and was nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award in 2011. He was a Finalist in the Seattle International Comedy Competition, has been on two USO Tours of IRAQ and Kuwait and opened for Bob Saget, Martin Short, Brad Garrett and the 80's musical impersonator André Philippe-Gagnon. He has been featured on Shaw Cable, CBC TV, CBC Radio, XM Radio and CTV.

In April Lars will be appearing at the Halifax Comedy Festival and he recently finished his second tour opening for Miss Joan Rivers. From Boston to San Francisco, from Las Vegas to Vancouver, Lars has become an overnight success in just 8 years! ed Magazine named Lars "One of the top ten comedians to watch, if you're already at a show... and he's on it."

The Edmonton ACSESS Chapter Board is looking for volunteers to fill some open positions on the Board for the 2012 – 2013 year. If you would like to give some time back to the industry and are interested in volunteering, please contact Ben Currie.

1) General Election and Nominations: As we did not have our February Chapter meeting, we were not able to speak on the open positions for 2013/2014. The open positions are completely voluntary and are typically for a 2 year term. Our Edmonton Chapter has had great representation and attendance from our members, but it is my goal to continue to make ACSESS in Edmonton an exciting and contributing part of the industry. In order to do so, we NEED support on the Board level.

Positions for Nomination:

• Vice President – 2 year term
• Director – 2 year term
• Director – 2 year term

If you would like to nominate someone from your office or another ACSESS member her in Edmonton; please email me directly with their (Name, Company, Contact info, and position to which they are being nominated).

Please email me the above information no later than Friday, April 19th at 5pm. I will then be emailing out the list of nominees before our membership meeting on Wednesday, April 24th in which we will hold our elections.

I am very excited for 2013/14 and I believe that with a strong Board and Membership, the Edmonton ACSESS Chapter can continue to add value to your organization, employees and the overall industry.

Please welcome Kathryn McCutcheon, Program Manager, Junior Achievement for Edmonton and Northern Alberta.

Kathryn McCutcheon began her journey with Junior Achievement over 10 years ago in the JA Company Program, an after school program that allows students in High School to run and operate their own businesses. For three years, Kathy oversaw Human Resources and Production of her student run companies. In 2006, she was awarded a variety of accolades from the organization, including the Vice President of Production of the Year and Global Women of Vision. During her post secondary career, she worked as a student intern with the company in the program department.

Upon graduation in 2011 from the Faculty of Education, she assumed the role of program coordinator and has since moved on to become the Program Manager of Greater Edmonton. She currently volunteers with the JA Program that began her journey one decade ago, and was recently able to take some of her students to compete in an international competition in Montevideo, Uruguay for the 2012 title JA Company of the Year Americas.

* Junior Achievement of Northern Alberta will impact the lives of nearly 20,000 youth from Red Deer to Fort McMurray this year in grades 3 through 12 with the help of over 250 volunteers.

Please join ACSESS Edmonton on April 11th, 2012, for a luncheon with Darren Thomas, Director of Fair Trading with Service Alberta.

Mr. Thomas is responsible for regulations relating to employment agencies, cost of credit disclosure, collections & debt repayment, credit reporting, payday lending, time shares & travel clubs, and retail home sales. He acts as liaison with a number of organizations related to automotive sales and business, home-building, collections, and cemeteries. He has been working extensively with employment agency issues since 2007 and has met with a wide range of stakeholders on employment agency and recruitment issues.

Mr. Thomas has a Master's Degree from the University of British Columbia and has been with the Government of Alberta for seven years.

Legal Aspects Staffing Services:

Also identifies acceptable industry business practices, the legal and professional ramifications of unethical business practices and the process of reporting breeches of the ACSESS Code of Ethics.

Shaun Doetzel
After attending NAIT and graduating from the Radio and Television program, Shaun enjoyed a short stint as a television news reporter in central and northern Alberta. While Shaun enjoyed working in this industry, he soon realized what he liked most about it was talking to and learning about different people. So it made for a pretty logical transition when Shaun decided to completely change career paths and venture into the dynamic world of recruiting. Shaun started his recruitment career in the staffing industry handling all aspects of temporary and permanent staffing. After 3 years he made the move to the corporate side of recruiting and joined the Ledcor Group of Companies. Shaun currently manages the Trades Recruitment department with Ledcor where he oversees a team of 15 Trades Recruitment Coordinators who support the various operational groups of the company.

Glenda Rouleau
Glenda has led strategic Human Resources functions in manufacturing, financial services, biotechnology and not-for-profit sectors.  Working with award winning organizations including one of  “Canada’s Best Managed Companies” and the “Biotechnology Company of the Year”, she has built teams that have delivered best-in-class results for their organizations.

In addition to her career achievements, Glenda holds her Bachelor of Commerce Degree from the University of Calgary with a major in Management of Organizations and Human Resources.  She attained her Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation in 1995.  Giving back to the community is very important to Glenda, having served on volunteer boards for her profession, and for charity.  She was the Board Chair of the Christmas Bureau of Edmonton for two terms in 2002/03, a cause that she continues to support.

Amanda Lippert
Amanda Lippert is an individual not unlike thousands of other individuals currently out in our labor workforce.  She is a 33 year old college professional (a graduate from the Office Technology Administration Diploma from Durham College in Ontario) who is “between careers”!  After leaving a position as a Financial Assistant for Super Channel, Amanda made the decision to register with a number of staffing agencies to “broaden her search”.  

From a staffing agency prospective, Amanda is an ideal “temporary employee” - she is professional, well spoken and assesses at an advanced level in Microsoft Office – in short, as a recruiter, you could place her in almost any assignment.  Amanda will be joining us to discuss what criteria she used in choosing a staffing agency to register with – what she expects from the recruiter that she is working with and what she finds out in the workplace as a “temporary employee”.  She also will be able to provide some feedback from the clients prospective as to their thoughts about agency personnel.  As she is currently registered with a number of agencies, Amanda will highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the various agencies and, most importantly, how we can improve our service to both our candidate and our client.

Adam will speak on the basics of social media and how organizations are using these new tools to engage with their customers and clients online. This "social media 101" presentation focuses on the best practices of social media and will equip you with the knowledge to begin using these tools within your organization — or at the very least, the ability to discuss them in-depth at cocktail parties.

Annual Santa’s Anonymous Drive

Please do not forget its Christmas time!  Each year for the Christmas luncheon the ACSESS board asks our members to donate to Santa’s Anonymous.  This is a great charitable organization whose goal is to provide toys to children in unfortunate situations who may not receive one during the holiday season.  Santa’s Anonymous has some suggestions for those who may not know what to give.  If you are unsure please click on the link below for more information.  Thank you for assisting us with this fantastic cause by bringing unwrapped toys for the children.

Ron Gilbertson is the President and CEO of Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, a not-for-profit company owned by the City of Edmonton that is responsible for regional economic development and tourism marketing, and management of the Shaw Conference Centre and Edmonton Research Park.

This will be an informative session that will give us the insight on what to expect in the next year with the Edmonton Economy.

Dear Alberta members,

On May 7th, 2010, ACSESS met with the Alberta government to provide detailed feedback on the discussion paper entitled Employment Agency Business Licensing Regulation Legislative Review. The discussion paper had been prepared to gather input from Albertans regarding proposed changes to the regulations governing employment agencies. We outlined our support for some of the proposed changes and offered recommendations for improvement with respect to others.

The Director of Fair Trading is in the process of reviewing and assessing all feedback received from stakeholders. The next step will be the formation of a working group (September, 2010) to further discuss improvements to the Business Licensing Regulation.

ACSESS has been identified as a key stakeholder in these consultations moving forward and I will be sure to keep you posted on our progress in this file.
